When it comes to natural hair, transitioning seems to bring out the most questions. Understandably so, its the new adventure into the unknown. Although we have a transitioning 101 section here on the blog. We felt the need to list the do’s and dont’s that many may not even think about. Some of these will be repeats of what we have listed, but good info never hurt anyone right?
So here goes!
First the dont’s:
Don’t dye your hair AT ALL during your transition period. Many may want to dye their hair to feel more comfortable with the change of hair texture, styling and overall look, but this does not help your transition. Remember the over all point of “going natural” is to shed the chemicals. So adding dye will only be a revolving door to your journey.
Don’t do any excessive blow drying. This one can be tricking because everyone has different hair textures. For some, excessive blow drying and straightening will compromise your curl pattern. There are others that will automatically have that bounce back curl no matter how much heat you put on it. Here’s a good rule of thumb:
In the beginning you want to learn your texture and especially if you want a kinky natural hair look, do not apply a lot of heat.
Now the do’s:
Do expect the unexpected. Many have preconceived notions about what their hair texture will be like. This can be a good and bad thing. Embrace what ever texture you have. Some of our hair is thicker that others. Some have hair that grows faster than others etc. This is a big part of self love.
Do experience with different hairstyles. Everyone has a signature style that they can wear everyday. This may just take some practice if learning to style your hair in its natural state.
Do learn to do your own hair if you don’t know how. This is very important. Although going to a salon is nice, it is equally important to know how to do your own hair. In between those salon appointments, if you do go.
Be conscience of what you put in your hair. This is a key part of your journey. Teach yourself the basics as to what works well in the hair, dries it out etc.
We hope these small key points help in your transition journey. If you have a question that was not answered here be sure to contact us at info (at)thenaturalhighblog (dot) com
