While scrolling through Instagram I came across a post regarding a new Army regulation.
Being a veteran myself relatable posts such as this stick out to me.
This was the photo:
I remember saying out loud “twists are not authorized??”
Wanting to verify this information, I headed over to my friend “Google” and there it was, United States Army new grooming regulations in varies articles across the web.
What’s interesting about this new regulation is that it appears to be racially bias with respect to women of color.
New unauthorized hairstyles includes, twists, locs and braids that are 1/4 in thickness.
The regulation continues with this information:
So multiple braids are permitted but not twists?
Here is another question with “Braids must also start at the front of the head” ? I am trying to envision what the regulation is trying to permit/not permit here.
They seem to cut out any plans to wear twists or locs as I prefer to call them. Dreadlocks and locs are not the same. If you follow my blog you already know my feelings on this.
There are several new regulations against natural hair, but wigs are allowed. That is a bit confusing itself. Isn’t it?
Of course there are specific rules for wig wearing as well, but in essence its a bit backwards.
A petition has been in place to ask the Army to reconsider these regulations. Over 30% of the women that make up the branch are women of color. Many are natural and if these new regulations take effect this will leave those with natural hair no options at all.
So what is the alternative ?
While I was in the service I did wear twists and braids. All of course were neat and presentable.
Take a moment to sign this petition if you agree to actions against it.
Thank you
