Natural HAIR Myths

Natural HAIR Myths

We have all heard them before.  The  “pre going natural” hair myths.  The untrue  ideas behind natural hair.  Lots of these myths have most likely made you think twice about stepping into the natural hair world.

Here are a few of my own:

  •  Natural Hair can not look professional-MYTH.   There are tons of ways to achieve a professional look with natural hair.  Many debate on  going natural because they worry about how their hair may be perceived in an office setting or even during a job interview.  It is important to embrace your natural hair in any setting.  This needs to be reflective during any occasion big or small.
  • You don’t have to condition your hair as much when it is Natural  -MYTH.  Conditioning your hair becomes more important especially when you are starting off fresh with going natural.  You definitely want to start off on the right foot.
  • Men dont like Natural Hair-MYTH.  Speaking to a lot of my male friends from time to time, they express their love of natural hair.  Actually alot of them are preferring it overall instead of extensions, weaves or wigs. I think this is also attractive because it shows you are comfortable in your own skin. *Whether they do or don’t. . if you like it then that’s all that matters:)
  • Natural Hair doesn’t grow as fast as relaxed hair-MYTH. Natural hair grows even faster when it is in it’s natural state.  Depending on your hair texture you may not be able to see the length right away.  Less is always much more and your hair will appreciate being chemical free.
  • Natural Hair is stronger than relaxed hair-MYTH. Natural hair is more fragile than relaxed hair.  It is naked and requires more attention then you would think.  When it comes to combing. I perfer to use my fingers to loose out twists or achieving a different style.
  • Braids and extensions make your hair grow-MYTH.  Although wearing braids may seem like your hair is growing faster it really isn’t.  I think this may seem true because when your hair is braided you aren’t combing it, styling it as often.  So when you do take your braids out your hair seems longer.  Hair typically grows about a half an inch per month.
