Happy Hair Anniversary Feature: Candice McDougald

It’s always great when we can share a new hair feature with you.  Why? Because our differences and commonalities are what makes us all unique.

So, our latest hair feature is none other than Candice McDougald. Today is Candice’s Natural Hair Anniversary!!! šŸ™‚

How long have you been natural?

My last relaxer was March 9th 2010 and I have been fully natural for 11 months

Did you transition if so how long?

Yes I transitioned for 12 months

When did you big chop?

What inspired you to wear your natural hair?

My last relaxer was a horrible experience. My scalp was covered in chemical burns and my hair began to break in the middle.

What has kept you motivated to stay natural?

I started on a journey to just grow my hair back, but I found that natural hair was bigger than just a style. The positive example that I can portray to my litter sister that beauty is not just in long flowing hair but it’s in kinks, and coils too. I love the response that my hair receives. It is it’s own spokeswomen for self love!

What is one natural hair products that you frequently purchase?

Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in conditioner!

What do you love about your natural hair?

I love how versatile it is. I can wear it curly, big, braided, twisted, strait… the possibilities are endless.

What tip would your recommend to someone who wants to become natural, is transitioning, or needs advice about natural hair?

I was shocked at the amount of skepticism and frowns that I received from strangers and even some friends. I decided to not let the small negative attention sway my decision to have natural hair.

There is a beginning for everything in life including a natural hair journey, enjoy each stage. Have patience, do your research, love your hair, and your hair will love you back!

**Thank you Candice for blessing us with a little taste of your hair journey.
